1997 - Solo - Crawford Gallery - Velocity - Sydney

The show was suppose to be called Velocity, not Philosophy… (A break down in communication)

Artist Statement:

Science or Science Fiction, Physics or Quantum Physics?

A way to escape the standard constraints of life as I know it.
This series of paintings portrays elements of my past and future.

The horizontal and vertical stripes of colour represent the colours of the uniforms from my favourite
sci-fi show Star Trek, of which I have been a fan for 31 years.

The black lines are black holes or a place to which we have all travelled and returned many times in our lives.  A place of depression, love, separation, exhaustion, triumph and failure.

These new works herald a period of serenity, a departure from my previously hectic, frenzied approach to painting.  Whereas earlier works focused on highly intricate and detailed expression, this series celebrates a more structural approach extending the metaphor to represent the structure of the universe.  The humour accompanying my earlier work has transmuted into a more ironic sense of gravity.  As any devotee of Star Trek will readily admit, the business of ensuring universal harmony is a serious one.
Administered with the utmost regard to morality and cross-cultural sensitivity, the task is guided by the Prime Directive, a correlate of the Golden Rule, which can be found in the major religions of the world today.

The realisation of it's concepts, it's belief in understanding other worldly cultures and the many different cultures on our own turf, inspire us towards a better future.

Of course, human experience is laced with visionary ideals. My grandfather's work with the United Nations earlier this century was committed to a new idealism.  Could he have imagined the threat to ideals of harmony and justice in our country at the end of the twentieth century?
